  • I never got Japanese text to work on Windows before XP. I vaguely recall doing something in a control panel somewhere, sticking in my WinXP CD, rebooting.
  • Windows XP: I do not quite remember what I did to get Japanese working on XP.
  • If you have not done so already, you must enable Japanese Language and ことえり Input Method in the International System Preferences panel.
  • Mac OS X: ships with Japanese support built in.
  • Mayjay is always case-sensitive for English text, so Godan works, but godan does not. A space before verb filters out adverb, using Godan or Ichidan picks the type of verb. This tip is a little tricky: the idea is to exactly match the part of speech that the dictionary uses.
  • Use * verb or * noun to limit search results: 行 returns 676 results, but 行* verb returns only 91 results, and 行*Godan returns 26 results.

  • When in doubt, leave it out: たべられません will not find anything, but if you cut down to the stem たべ you get plenty of hits.
  • Use single words, not clauses or phrases: 私は will not find anything, but 私 will.
  • Use dictionary form: たべます will not find anything, but たべる will.
  • Mayjay places implicit wildcards at the start and end of any search string, you do not need to. Mayjay does not support multiple wildcards in a single string. You can use type a single asterisk * to stand for zero or more characters. Try a few English synonyms and maybe you will find a good Japanese match. The JMdict dictionary data that Mayjay displays is biased towards English definitions of Japanese terms, so English-to-Japanese lookups do not always produce useful results. If you do not know kanji, you can type the reading in hiragana, if you know it or can find it (furigana is your friend). You can type Japanese with kanji or hiragana, or katakana for loanwords.
